برای بیان تاریخچه ای مختصر و جالب باید سرنخ شروع ماجرا را از توماس ادیسون مخترع برق و الکساندرگراهامبل مخترع تلفن شروع کنیم تا پس از لختی به بانی اصلی گرامافون یعنی امیلی برلینر اصالتا آلمانی برسیم.
در ابتدا تلاش های زیادی توسط مخترعان و دانشمندان برای تولید و ضبط صدا شد که اولین تلاش جدی را توماس ادیسون با دستگاه اولیه خود یعنی فونوگراف در1877 پایه گذاشت. دستگاه فونوگراف ادیسون صداهای ضبط شده را از روی یک دیسک دایروی می خواند؛ درست همان کاری که بعدها گرامافون انجام داد. کیفیت صدای پخش شده در فونوگراف بد و زمان پخش یک تراک هم خیلی طولانی بود.
فونوگراف ادیسون توسط الکساندرگراهامبل دنبال شد و اصلاحات زیادی روی فونوگراف ادیسون اعمال شد؛ بطوریکه هم کیفیت و هم تعداد دفعات پخش صدا بالاتر رفت؛ اما هنوز با خلق نهایی آن اختراع مورد انتظار فاصله داشت. درنهایت امیلی برلینر آلمانی در واشنگتن آمریکا و در 1887 گرامافون و ضبط را اختراع کرد.
در8 نوامبر 1887 امیلی که یک آلمانی مهاجر در آمریکا بود در واشنگتن دی سی موفق به اختراع موفق ترین سیستم ضبط صدا شد. او اولین مخترعی بود که ضبط روی سیلندر استوانه را متوقف و ضبط روی دیسک تخت را شروع نمود. اولین رکوردها از شیشه روی و کمی پلاستیک ساخته شده بودند. بعدها امیلی برلینر کمپانی گرامافون را هم بنیاد نهاد که هم دیسک و هم وسیله ای که صدای آن دیسک را پخش می کند یعنی گرامافون را با هم عرضه نمود./
